10 kitchen fails every student at home can relate to

Upgrading your culinary skills takes more patience and practice than you’d think. But every student at home can find solidarity on social media. The post…

If you’re a student at home or in a dorm under quarantine, chances are you’ve been spending a lot more time in the kitchen.
Many are discovering hidden talents in cooking or baking. They now flood our social media with close-ups of their sourdough loaves, IG live tutorials on how to make gyozas and TikToks one-upping the rest of the world with their five-tier, Nutella-smothered, raspberry-topped banana breads.
Then there’s the rest of us…

No social life, cooking weird food combinations, and and living like a hermit. My time as a grad student prepared me well for this quarantine.

Graduating from box brownies to sourdough bread is going to take more than two weeks, maybe even until the time they finally discover a COVID-19 vaccine. For this student, there’s no qualifying for Masterchef or even Masterchef Kids overnight.
But as we swallow our failed kitchen attempts, or whatever that could be salvaged from them, we can take refuge from the fact that social media offers thousands of tweets and TikToks worth of solidarity. As we eat our burned chocolate chip cookies laced with too much baking soda or pita breads with no pita bread pockets, we can do so as we watch thousands of others share the painful, funny, even downright puzzling ways they’ve messed up in in the kitchen on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
These baking and cooking fails prove that even in our lowest moments, we are not alone. Our food tastes bad, but we have the companionship of other fallen comrades and potential Burger King vouchers to eat our kitchen sorrows away.

Instagram chefs getting you down? Banana breads not rising? Has your home cooking left you wishing for a Whopper? Show us your cooking fails and we’ll send the worst some vouchers as a treat for when this is all over. #WishItWasAWhopper

The simple stuff can be the hardest to nail. Just ask this pancake enthusiast:

“Everyone is baking bread, it can’t be that hard,” said the unsuspecting student at home.

When you confidently add way too much of a key ingredient…

…and instead of a sweet treat, you get Type-2 diabetes in the form of a pastry monstrosity.

Unmitigated disaster. When cupcakes couldn't go more wrong. I couldn't find my mom's trusted recipe, so I picked one at random online and freestyled the icing. The cupcakes are about 200% too sweet and they stuck to the pan because I ran out of spray & cook and had to use olive oil spray (tip: don't do that). I reduced the icing quantity but made it so sweet we gagged, so I then added extra liquid to balance the sweetness. Ended up with a sloppy mess that I attempted to fix with cornstarch (tip: don't do that either). Lexi was so disgusted she didn't bother to finish decorating them or steal all the smarties off the top. To top it off, all of us feel ill after sampling these monstrosities. I think I'll stick to savoury!!! #kitchenfail #cookingfail #cupcakes #icingfordays #sometimesyouhaveanoffday

You know it’s bad when your friends ask “Soo… what was it supposed to be?”

Sometimes, love is the secret ingredient.

Sometimes things don't work out as planned. I attempted to make spaghetti squash hashbrowns and they didn't really hold together too well. They tasted good at least! #cookingwithdanandsara #coronaviruscooking #brunchsohard #cookingwithleftovers #cookingfail

Then you realise it doesn’t taste as bad as it looks. You live to conquer the kitchen another day.

There’s no need to be sour! It was my first time making @alisoneroman #nothingfancycookbook Lemony Tumeric Tea Cake; the pan was too small and the batter sank, one of the lemon slices is fully submerged. But the cake still tastes PHENOMENAL and we will eat it all and try again another time! • • • #dessert #dessertathome #homemade #homebaking #homecooking #homechef #lemons #lemony #teacake #uglydelicious #bakingfail
